Book Review on A Tale of Two Cities Charles John Huffam Dickens was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's most memorable fictional characters and is generally regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian period. During his life, his works enjoyed unprecedented fame, and by the twentieth century his literary genius was broadly acknowledged by critics and scholars. His novels and short stories continue to be widely popular. Over his career he edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, 5 novellas and hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles, lectured and performed extensively, was an indefatigable letter writer, and campaigned vigorously for children's rights, education, and other social reforms. Dickens was regarded as the literary colossus of his age. His 1843 novella, A Christmas Carol, is one of the most influential works ever written, and it remains popular and continues to inspire adaptations in every artistic genre. His creative genius has been praised by fellow writers—from Leo Tolstoy to G.k.Chesterton and George Orwell—for its realism, comedy, prose style, unique characterization, and social criticism. A Tale of Two Cities is a novel by Charles Dickens, set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. The novel depicts the plight of the French peasantry demoralized by the French aristocracy in the years leading up to the revolution, the corresponding brutality demonstrated by the revolutionaries toward the former aristocrats in the early years of the revolution, and many unflattering social parallels with life in London during the same time period. It follows the lives of several protagonists through these events. The most notable are Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton. Darnay is a former French aristocrat who falls victim to the indiscriminate wrath of the revolution despite his virtuous nature, and Carton is a dissipated English barrister who endeavors to redeem his ill-spent life out of his unrequited love for Darnay's wife. When my best friend strongly recommends reading a book called A Tale of Two Cities, I feel confuse why does she love this book and what does the book impart us? Therefore, I chosen to read the book-- A Tale of Two Cities. After reading A Tale of Two Cities, I comprehend what is the kindhearted; what is the love; what is the forgiveness. So I will introduce some generous and kind person to you to make you realize what is the kindhearted; what is the love; what is the forgiveness. Mr.Manette, a kind and honest doctor, had been a prisoner in the Bastille for eighteen years. He loses his memory and what he suffered was difficult to imagine, nevertheless, he still loves his daughter. Maybe that’s why he allowed Lucie to marry Darnay, although he remembers Darnay’father and uncle were the men that had ever sent him to prison. For his love to his daughter, he chooses to forgive the Darnay’father and uncle and forget his miserable suffers. This is a father’love. At the same time, Mr. Manette’forgiveness makes his daughter find a good husband and live a happy life. Sydney Carton, a lawyer’s assistant, he has the same appearance with Darney. He loves Lucie but he does not disturb her and make her live a happy life. Before Darney went to guillotine. Mr Carton changed places with him and he said, “it is a far, far better thing that I do than I have ever done. It is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.” This a real love. If you love a person, you are not to company with him or her, but to make him or her live a happy life. This kind of love is beyond love itself. If you learn how to forgive others and how to become a kindhearted person, you will obtain the full of love, including the love between father and daughter, the love between husband and wife, the love among friends and so on. Certainly, only if you have love in your heart, the life is more meaningful and happier.
