Some people think war causes enormous damage and death so that it should be forbidden. As for me, I believe that war is inevitable despite it brings damage. There are many effects of war. And I will use the American civil war as an example. First, the war produced about 1,030,000 casualties, including about 620,000 soldier deaths. Soldiers subject to combat in war often suffer mental and physical injuries, including depression, disease, injury and death. In Civil War Collector’s Encyclopedia, F.A. Lord notes that of the 27,574 discarded muskets found on the Gettysburg battlefield, nearly 90% were loaded, with 12,000 loaded more than once and 6,000 loaded 3 to 10 times. These studies suggest that most soldiers resist firing their weapons in war. Some experts think human beings have inherent resistance to kill their fellow human beings. A researcher found that after continuing combating sixty days, 90% of all surviving soldiers will become psychiatric casualties.Second, war causes injury and death to civilians. Based on 1860 census figures, 8% of all white males aged 13 to 43 died in the war, including 6% in the North and 18% in the South. Survivors may suffer the psychological aftereffects of witnessing the destruction of war. Third, war leads to economic loss. In time of war, the government must focus entire people and material resources of the state on war. The economy may develop slowly even setback. Besides, both farmland and factories always be destroyed. Most banks and railroads were bankrupt. Income of each person in the South dropped to less than 40% of that of the North, and this condition lasted until into 20th century. However, after wining, the slavery was abolished, which emancipated a lot of free work force. It not only eliminates obstacles for the development of American capitalism but also lay a basis of the American second industrial revolution.Last but not least, war brings about a prosperity of arts. War literary often shows an expression of intense feeling. In addition, arts can reflect the social status and promote the reform of the society, such as The Tom’s Cabin. Above all, a war is more harm than good. Moreover, there are both many anti-war movements and some organizations and treaty to safeguard the world peace. But war has never been stopped. Why? Because war is inescapable. There are many reasons for people to start a war. What’s more, the person who starts a war is usually a politician but not a soldiery for war is a extremely political and diplomatic means. I think the three most important are economy, the source of energy and religion. In the Civil War, the North wanted more work force to develop it industry while the South carried out the slavery. So in order to develop the economy, the war began. The American government started Iraq war in order to control the oil resource of the Middle East. And the Iran-Iraq war was as a result of religious conflict. In conclusion, though war causes a lot of damage, it will not be avoidable because of human beings’ endless desire.
