Louisa May Alcott was one of the most influential and classical female writers in the 19th century. She was born in Pennsylvania in 1832. The Alcott family then settled in Concord, Massachusetts. Her father Amos Bronson Alcott was an excellent philosopher, social reformer and utopian。Even though living in a hard period, he had never forgotten to study the philosophy and realize the society in practice. Many people thought Amos Bronson Alcott was such odd other than Ralph Waldo Emerson, the friend of the family, regarded him as the sage of Concord. Alcott’s mother practices personally what one preaches, which influenced her deeply. Louisa May Alcott was the second of four daughters. Taught by her father, Alcott was interested in literature, especially the creation of drama and performance. At the age of 16, when she acquainted some prominent transcendentalists, such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry David Thoreau, she wrote her first book, Flower Fable. During the American Civil War, which was broke out in 1861, Alcott dedicated in the nursing, gradually realizing the pain, the illness and the death. According to the unforgettable experience, she wrote another book, Hospital Sketches (1863). Nevertheless, the depressed situation indeed damaged her health. In order to make a living, she worked as a tutor, sewer, servant as well as editor. Rich experience made it possible for her to root the understanding towards society; meanwhile, setbacks nurtured her spirit of humanism. She wrote poems since 1863 when the first novel, Moods, was published. But it is to be regretted that it didn’t catch the attention. At that time, Alcott was invited to write books referring to children literature. But she refused. Instead, she was eager to record the story of her own family. In 1868, under the advice of a publisher that writing a book for girls, Little Women was published and gained the popularity with people of all ages. The story happened in a small town in New England during the American Civil War, focusing on the four sisters’ distinct characteristics and the seeking for love, marriage and fortune. Influenced by the proposal of Ralph Waldo Emerson, the novel was flat but exquisite, pure but meaningful. Alcott reached her peak via Little Women. Later on, she published the sequel of Little Women, Good Wives (1886), Little Men (1871), and Joe’s Boys (1886). Besides, Old Fashioned Girl (1870), Work (1873), Eight Cousins (1875), and Rose in Bloom (1876) gained the popularity as well. Except for literature, Alcott was fascinated with politics. She had ever taken part in women election campaign to improve the statue of women.
