This thesis makes an extensive exploration of Louisa May Alcott’s masterpiece, Little Women. The Four Sisters have distinct characteristics, daring to break the fetters for women imposed and arranged by the family and society. This paper discusses how American Puritanism reflected by the March. The description of the March shows a typical Puritan family life with love and diligence. Besides, Little Women can make it clear to catch the characteristics and doctrines of Puritans towards the life. The novel demonstrates the importance of the Puritan work ethic, which dictates that it is holy to do work. Alcott ultimately recommends work not as a means to the expression of inner goodness and creativity through productivity. Alcott emphasized the importance of paying more attention to the inner spiritual self than to temporary, earthly conditions like wealth and impressive appearances, and he incorporates this philosophy into Little Women In this thesis, the first chapter introduces the Louisa May Alcott’s life experience and writing career. The second chapter demonstrates the he critical reviews and approval ideas of Litter Women, as well as American Puritanism. The next chapter is conducted the American Puritanism reflected in Little Women. In this part, the paper shows the process and the doctrines of American Puritanism. Besides, the American Puritanism can be reflected by various characters in Little Women. Although these four girls born in a poor family, they all had the positive and optimism attitude to any matters. In general, the novel had laid emphasis on their individuality and the dignity. Most importantly, independence is these four girl’s common characteristic as well as the doctrines of Puritans, which help them keep discovering their own shortcomings and correct them as soon as possible. As the girls grow older, each faces her own personal challenges. Jo, boyish lady, pursues her career and ambition to be a great writer. Meg, the oldest sister, has a small weakness for luxury and leisure, but the greater part of her is gentle and loving. She is willing to share the equal statue with men. Beth is very quiet and very virtuous, and she does nothing but try to please others. As the youngest March girls, Amy is an artist who adores visual beauty and has a weakness for pretty possessions. In addition, Mrs. March is the moral role for the family and her children. She counsels them through all of their problems and works hard but happily while her husband is at war. Mr. March serves in the Union army as a chaplain. He plays an indispensable part in the running of the whole family. The novel ends with the family happily gathered together, each sister thankful for her blessings and for each other.
