　　　　　　　　Old building：the memory of a nation Due to ignorance of the significance of the traditional relic architecture in nowadays urban modernization ，many of the old buildings are damaged seriously or badly reconstructed. The old building, the crystallization of the ancient people’s sweat and wisdom, is the memory of a nation. The traditional relic architecture has gracefully witnessed the rise and fall of the nation, and they together with the people weathered the catastrophe and disaster. 　　However, there are still many people who consider the traditional relic architecture a heavy burden for the modernization. Most of the old buildings need routinely restoration due to the decay of their building material. Therefore, the government has to allocate funds for the maintenance. Many people think that the old building belongs to the past, and the society is moving forward. Though the old building has its precious value, it can not be an exclusive during the process of the urban modernization. And they also think the old building ought not to get in the way of the modernization and should the government should the give priority to the construction of modernization, so those money used for the restoration and protection of the traditional relic architecture should be allocated to support the development of housing and road. 　　Here, I want to take Paris as an example. The Paris government has put lots of emphasis on the protection and restoration of the traditional relic architecture. Both the official and civil organizations joined to protect the old buildings by means of government financial allocation, raising fund and volunteering. The Paris government also issued a series of legislations and administrative regulations to ensure the functioning of the protection and restoration of the old buildings. All the efforts they have made are paid off nowadays. Today, Paris has become one of the most successful examples for its marvelous blending between the old and new. When we are walking inside Paris, you can feel the graceful and classical flavour filling the whole city. Old buildings like the Louver, the Ely’s e Palace and the Notre Dame de Paris are still well protected and has becoming a hot spot for sightseeing ,which have become a important industry for the city’s fiscal revenue. 　　In China, we are also facing the problem. Since the year of 1978, the Policy of Reform and Opening-up has stimulated the development of the Chinese modernization. China has become one of the powerful countries in the world. The development of the economy contributes to the growth of the urbanization. In Beijing, since 1990s, the traditional Beijing quadrangle dwellings has been pulled down or moved out due to the urban construction. Only a few of the quadrangle dwellings are untouched because of the protest and remonstration from the society. In Beijing, the traditional architecture is giving way to the development of the modernization. Nowadays, if you walk in the Beijing city, you will never know it’s a city with a history which can date back to the origin of the Chinese history. The modernized building has covered the core of Beijing’s culture, and the skyscraper has muffled Beijing’s history. 　　When the old buildings are pulled down, the city’s memory are gradually diminished. People will gradually find it a painful experience when their times are not remembered. In another word, when the elders who have witnessed our childhood pass away, to some extent, our earlier times have also gone with the wind.
