Nowadays, people all over the world prefer to watch foreign films much more than the locally produced ones. Why is this the case? Should the government give financial support to the local film industry?

Film industry is developing in an overwhelming pace in the contemporary world, in nearly every country throughout the world (except for Africa). However, a strange and confusing phenomenon has formed: people around the world prefer foreign films, rather than supporting those made locally. To make a better local market, some people suggested that government should invest this industry, but there are opponents for this idea. In this essay, I aim to analyze the causes of this condition and make sure whether this opinion is worth trying. Firstly, a sense of chasing new, fresh content is common for all individuals. Despite that a country can incorporate cultures with diversity, it cannot encompass other countries’ tradition. In other word, every country has its own uniqueness, which involves stereotype, historical background, and conventions and so forth. These factors can significantly influence the film industry in that country, with unspoken similarities, even if there are many types of films such as action and comedy. For example, action movies made in China mainly focus on the subtlety of action, spreading knowledge of Kung Fu, while this kind of film made in US can be focusing on bloody, drastic fights, with large muscle that China people rarely have, and less subtlety in actions can be seen. Such difference contributes to shifts of preference on movies, and lead to this condition. There is one more factor lead to this issue: countries use approaches and techniques that differ in large extents. 3D effects and special effect are popular in recent years, particularly in US film industry while that in China are not widely utilized. People who always watch movies tend to be realistic are likely to prefer new, unrealistic but attractive, vivid scenes produced abroad, while those who lack the sense of being natural in watching movie would like to try films like documentary or those without special effects. In addition, there are some new categories of film that thrive in recent years, for example, cartoon movie made by Japan. Such film provide totally different feel, being realistic and unrealistic, with special drawing styles that create landscape, background, characters that can be hardly achieved by men. Many countries are lagged behind in film industry. Hence, some people proposed that government should fund this business. Personally, I reckon that it is wrong for government to take this action. Such action may show an inclination of government to a specific industry, which can raise a debate of unfair. Besides, money of government should be invested to improvements of lives such as financial aids and infrastructure, rather than in recreations, because money is collected by imposition of tax, and people have different ideas about how to use the money properly, and evidently investment on films would be unacceptable. In conclusion, there are cultural and techniques differences that lead to this kind of preference on film, and I do not think investing films is a good idea. However, government can help in a less effective but more acceptable way, for example, they can invest education, which involves a major of film making.
