JOB HUNTING With lower college graduate employment rates being reported in many provincial regions,job hunting has become an uphill battle as the year's graduate supply is expected to hit a record high——about 7 million student are graduating from Chinese collages this year. The reason for such a huge number lies in the expansion of collage enrollment in the late 1990s as the government hope to make more people have access to higher education.The expansion was also expected to boost consumer spending to tend off the impacts of the Asian Financial Crisis,as well as to ease immediate pressure on the labor market.The result is that,the title of "collage student",once a shining halo for Chinese people in the late 1980s and 1990s,is now virtually synonymous with"soon-to-be unemployed". In view of the seriousness of this problem,it is urgent the government to take action to improve the employment condition of collage grads.It goes without saying that such measures as providing training subsidies,petty loans,tax breaks and other incentives goes a long way in encouraging grads to turn toward self-employment and start their own businesses.Most crucially,the government should also promote equality in employment through openness and transparency and strictly prevent discrimination based on gender,ethnicity,disability or other factors. As I see it,a successful career is not only related to your degree certificate but also closely related to the "soft power" you have,so it is great significance to develop "soft power" if you want a decent job upon graduating.For instance,as collage student,we must study certain skills of which traditional education lack but employers value,such as cross-cultural communication skills,curiosity and commitment to constant self-improvement.
