Charles Dickens was born on 7 February 1812, at Landport in Portsea Island. He came from a poor background. His father was a clerk in the navy Pay Office, and when Dickens was young, his father was imprisoned for debt. Then he was forced to leave school and work in a terrible blacking shoe factory. Although he received little formal education, his early impoverishment drove him to succeed. He was a good learner, he tried his best to make up for the deficiency through avid and extensive reading on his own. Later, he learned the stenography and became a journalist on parliamentary proceedings.
