原因：信息化时代information era的到来和全球一体化globalisation的发展使得现代人越来越依赖于媒体传递的信息。
好处：新闻给人们提供了大量的信息。关于国家的政治动向、政策变化的报道可以指导个人和公司的发展计划、投资理财；天气预报、路况信息等为个人的出行提供了指导；一些针对社会弱势群体的社会新闻也唤起公众的同情心，使有困难的人得到社会的帮助。
坏处：有些新闻来源不靠谱，特别是网络媒体。由于人人都可以通过twitter之类的社交网站social networking site来传播信息，因此给谣言rumour的传播提供了可能。有些媒体受政党控制，因此传递的是一些带偏见biased的消息，公众无法客观地从媒体中获取真相。甚至有些无良记者unscrupulous journalists为了引起轰动sensation，通过捏造一些假新闻chequebook journalism来吸引读者眼球。
结论：国家可以出台相关的法律法规related laws and regulations should be constituted，媒体应该进行自我审查impose auto-censorship，来规范媒体和记者的行为。而公众应当有独立思考能力和批判性思维能力independent thinking and critical thinking ability，来辨别新闻的真假。

Whether news media's influences are generally positive or negative is a frequent topic of discussion when it comes to the importance of the news media. There is no doubt that news media has become an indispensable part of human being's life. As everyone knows, nowadays, we are living in a massive information era, and the majority of the information is spreaded by the news media. We have gradually formed a habit of watching TV or listening to the music, both of which are the modes of transmission. Because of the information overload, only with the help of these media,can we pick up the new what we want to know more effectively. In other words, it can not only help us adapt to the high pace of life, but also keep us updated. Normally, the news mass media reports is closely connected to the human's life, which means it has a dominant influence on people. Put it in another way, people can use news media to influence the public opinions. Of course, if it is used by correct ways, it can exert a positive effect on the social development. For instance, the news media can be regarded as a means of supervision to government's performance, which can improve the image of government and the public trust on it. Obviously, the news media is expected to provide reliable news stories with the objective and fair. Nevertheless, news media is sometime against the principle of being accurate and unbiased, distort facts and mislead the public due to the profit-driven reasons. Pursuing profit over truth contributes to media sensationalism, with any means to attract more viewers, listeners or readers, like sacrificing the privacy of celebrities. In the end, people may distrust the news media. All in all, in view of the importance of news media, not only should it affect public opinions correctly, but also present in-depth and reliable coverage of hot issues. Especially, in face of a lot of hot public issues, people are supposed to think calmly and rationally,with their penetrating insights to provide fair and up-to-the minute news coverage.
