An increasing number of people choose to go to the cinema at weekends for one or two excellent movies which bring them laugh and think. The trend arouses people’s attention to the film industry which has come to a vogue in recent years and also gives a question: Is it better to watch serious movies to get deeper thoughts than to watch movies that amuse or entertain viewers? Based on my own experience , serious movies are more beneficial for individuals to develop themselves. To begin with, serious movies sometimes enrich us with knowledge of certain age characterized as distinctive roles, strange costume and unfamiliar culture. While seeing a movie , we assimilate these information and internalize them to personal views and recognition which are likely to be put into the use one day in our life. There is a famous movie entitled Gone with the wind, telling a story about a beauty’ devious life experience in the war years. I learn some generalized knowledge about the American Civil War , which, in an occasional case, promote a pleasant conversation between my English teacher and me. Besides, the positive spirit presented in the serious movies, to some extent, could encourage people to face difficulties when they get into trouble. “The Shawshank Redemption” describes an innocent person’s painful struggle in prison for decades, showing his strong eager and firm determination as a human being to regain freedom. Such a positive attitude towards life definitely leaves a profound impression on spectators, as well as absorbing plots. Even though entertaining movies make people laugh and relaxed, it is not as valuable as serious movies that always cherished as treasures in our minds. I appreciate “Forrest Gump” several times and develop new understanding every time. Thus, I firmly support that more serious movies should be produced to give spectators critical thinking , ample knowledge and warm heart.
