Are Dialects Just as Acceptable in Public Places? Recently, authority commanded local new reporters should use Mandarin instead of dialects, which raises a hot discussion. On the contrary, I believe that dialects can be accepted in public places for the following reasons. For one thing, dialects helps people communicate with each other well. Despite of the prevalent of Mandarin, local people are used to communicate in dialects in their daily life, especially the older and some who do not receive education. People may feel more comfortable to communicate with others in dialects. For another thing, dialects are well developed during the long history. It reflects thoughts and customs of specific places. In another words, it is the characteristic of specific places. All in all, we should be more tolerant with dialects and diversity. We should respect other places' culture. It means that dialects should be tolerant.
