I disagree with the view that snap judgments can never be trusted. Not all snap judgments are wrong and in some cases, snap judgments are far more than enough. People always make snap judgments and the following situations give explicit explanation on how well a snap judgment can be trusted. Snap judgments can sometimes be trusted since even though snap judgments are usually made without enough consideration, they can also be right. It usually does not take much time for experienced people to make right decisions. One of my friends has a talent for knowing the career of a stranger at first sight. She told us that a person's expressions, behavior and styles of conversation often reveal information about his or her occupation. Even though she made snap judgments about people mostly based on their appearances, it turns out that most of these judgments are right. Sometimes the first reaction based on snap judgments is more authentic and reliable than the deliberateness is. The natural response of people usually showed what actually presented in their minds at the time. Last week my girlfriend wore a sweater which I thought was a bit tacky. She later asked the question "How do I look?", and even though I know the only answer that fits her expectation is "You look fantastic!", I hammed and hawed without giving a definite answer, which made her really angry. This kind of snap judgments indicates what the real situation is and, in this case, they should be trusted. It is also the case that a snap judgment is more than enough and further judgments are not going to be made. For example, when reading a passage, a person may evaluate how long it takes to complete the whole passage and how many words this passage approximately has. Under the circumstances, no serious judgments are requisite and snap judgments are often trusted. In particular cases, snap judgments get to the essence of things. It is important to make the point clear, that not all snap judgments should be doubted and not every snap judgment can be trusted.
