My 62-year-old uncle, who moved into town ten years ago, has been complaining about the air pollution and traffic congestion for several years and is planning to move back to the village where life is inconvenient but cleaner and more relaxing. He seems to be not alone on this. There is a growing consensus that life in cities, especially metropolis, is getting tougher. Although these complaints are complex, ranging from pollution, which devastate people's health, to people's relationship, which seems to be quite fragile, the causes are simpler in my opinion. Competition plays the most crucial role in reducing life quality. Metropolises provide more abundant job opportunities than small towns so that more people, especially youngsters, choose to develop their careers in big cities. In this way, competition rises and most people have to accelerate their pace to keep up with and excel to others. This leads to higher life stress. As a result, more people place importance to fighting for a success on career, rather that creating a high quality living environment. Many problems emerge from this such as traffic jam, less communication between people. Many solutions are proposed such like more relaxing parks and theater should be built to alleviate the stress in urban life. These ideas are useful to some extent though, I personally reckon that the most efficient and basic way is to develop small cities so that these newly developed cities can absorb much investment, job opportunities and labour from metropolis, making the competition less fierce and population less concentrated. Government should be responsible for this by investing more money to companies in small cities and improve the infrastructure.
