Today, modern information technologies exert a significant influence on our common understanding towards education. The idea that higher education can only be received in specific place on specific time is mistaken. By means of the internet, students from all over the world may enjoy a class given by a teacher and take exam online simultaneously. By witnessing the advantages of distance leaning, some universities are now offering qualification through the internet. However, like many debateful innovations, this practice received tremendous praise as well as abuse. Advocators think that by offering qualifications through distance leaning the landscape of higher education may change greatly. From students' point of view, their cost of receiving higher education can be greatly reduced, because it can save them a lot of overhead to travel from one place to another, and they have more choices to select the subjects they are interested in, this is very attractive for students in poverty regions. Besides, by expending the scope of teaching, a teacher may receive more information from students through internet and in a way help them improve the quality of teaching. On the contrary, protesters also have their appealing reasons. For many engineering related subjects, the required condition, like equipment, lab and so on can not be provided by internet, the quality of teaching is not likely to be good. For some important subjects, like medical related subjects, no practice even means dangerous. Besides, the risk of cheating is much higher because student is not present on site during the exam. From teacher's perspective, face to face teaching is an interactive process, teacher can hardly adjust their way of teaching without vivid feedback from students. My personal view on this controversy is that distance leaning and face to face education are apporaches to enhance the quality of education they may by reconsiled with each other. We should make the most of its advantage, but clearly keep in mind the disadvantage of them and find the best occasion to apply them.
