Governments believe that we should wide roads to address the traffic congestion as it has been a serious problem in big cities. I disagree with the view because I believe that there are many other measures we can take to do more effective. On the one hand, I accept that it is important to wide main roads that have enormous vehicle fluent. In most huge cities there are so many private cars crash into that the entrance of the CBD are crowded, therefore keep the road have enough space is seen as necessary. In shanghai, for instance, government has wider the main road in recent years and the number of some traffic lanes has been added to six of eight. As the problem is decreasing in certain degrees, so many people feel that we should priority do this. Despite the above benefit of building wider roads, I believe that there are much more ways to improve the traffic jam. Firstly, planning city with correct road network should be the most important thing when the area is developed. The basic traffic situation would be decided in this way as the experiment had been proved in some American big cities. Secondly, governments should encourage the public transport rather than the private cars because the buses or subway system can take more effective than other form transport tools. Finally, we should use bicycles when traveling in short distance, therefore decreasing the traffic jam. In conclusion, it is true that wider roads can mitigate the jam situation, but in my opinion, more other measures governments could take to do it better.
