The Impact of the Internet on Interpersonal Communication The Internet influences interpersonal communication both extensively and intensively. On the one hand, it is a real blessing. Needless to say, it has brought revolution to the way we communicate. Plus, we are no longer confined to our neighborhood, that is to say, our social circle gets enlarged by virtue of the Internet. For one thing, it wipes out the barrier of distance and allows interaction among family members or friends who are far away from each other. In business an academic field, for another, instant messages and video conferences have boosted multinational corporations. Additionally, some messages are not suitable for face-to-face communication so that communication via the Internet, like Email, is right in the way. On the other, however, it causes inconvenience as well. One case in point is that fewer face-to-face talks prevent the vivid contact between two sides, thus glooming the relationship. Some Internet addicts may find it hard to tear away from the virtual world and fail to cope with people in the real world. Worse still, cheating is involved in cyber communication. The past decade have seen a great many victims who suffered severe losses due to their lack of caution in making friends. Both its advantages and disadvantages taken into account, it is how we use it that counts. It is of critical importance that we strike a balance between the Internet and life.
