An Analysis on English Characters As an old Chinese saying goes, each place has its own way of supporting its inhabitants, summarizing well the characters of the people in different areas or countries, which are both gradually developed in the environment where people live and influenced greatly by diverse cultures in which people are immersed through a long history. So nowadays we generally can associate some characters, which have been properly summarized, with certain people in a particular area, certainly with those of English people as no exception . For the context, we can conclude that the English character primarily embodies silence and gentility. In fact, society behaviour is a direct expression of a people’s national character and as such as culture in a kind of condensed form. Furthermore, the cultural environment that people grow up in can have surprising effects on how they interpret the world around them. Firstly, silence. It is obvious that British people is a silent nation, and “silence is gold ” is the eternal theme. They always keep reserved and are not willing to talk their personal life with strangers. The English seem as silent as the Japanese, yet vainer than the inhabitants of Thailand. The English has its origin in pride. Condescended to address them first and, you are sure of their acquaintance; stoop to flattery, and you conciliate their friendship and esteem. They bear hunger, cold, fatigue and all the miseries of life without shrinking, danger, only calls for their fortitude; they even exult in calamity, but contempt is what they cann’t bear. An Englishman fears contempt more than death. Secondly, gentility. The English modesty and sportsmanship both show their gentility. Of course, politeness principles also have other expressions, such as, conservation and showing respect to females. Actually, this kind of social morality formed during the time of Victoria. Queen Victoria was a serious and strict woman. She established a series of rules to require her children and the subjects of a feudal ruler, and she also was famous for her exquisite training. As a result, England has became a state of ceremonies all over the world. In fact, the reason why British people behave like this has some other factors. First of all, its geography is crucial. British is a island country separated by the English Channel. Some of British people even don’t think themselves as the Europeans. In the second place, British people are very proud of their history. For example, king James Authorized version of the Bible and the Shakespearean plays have a great influence on the world culture. England also was the first country that completed Industrial Revolution. In my mind, although England is a marvelous country, it needs to abandon the dross in their culture and begins to accept the essence of other developed culture. As for the language, we all know that terminology used by a culture primarily reflects that culture’s interests and concerns, and language use is a way of establishing and displaying group identity ways of speaking function not only to facilitate communication, but also to identify the social position of the speaker. “Reserved, conceited, and self-dispraise” are common words to describe British people. But other people rarely use these words to describe their character. Word use in this article is extremely accurate and Simon-pure. In addition, the author list these characters clearly and directly, so it is easy for reader to master the central theme quickly. And we can capture the information in the first sentence from every paragraph. All in all, culture, language, and society are impartible. They influence each other.
