English and Chinese both are used for communicating with others as a tool. English has its own characters; Chinese has too. Recently in a poll conducted by the China daily newspaper in Beijing, 17 of 40 foreigners polled said they think that Chinese is the most difficult language in the world. 19 of 50 foreigners lived in China now said that although sometimes it is inconvenient for them to communicate with others, they are not willing to learn Chinese, because Chinese is too difficult. In fact, many Chinese people also insist that Chinese doesn't seem easy to learn. There are several very important differences that make Chinese become more difficult than English, for example, characters, handwriting, and writing. The first major difference between English and Chinese is in their characters. Chinese Characters are so complex that many foreigners can’t master it easily. When an American two-year-old learns--with the help of Sesame Street---twenty -six character alphabet, he or she gained at least entrance to the entire English language, to practically the entire Indo-European language family. But the Chinese language has no alphabet, at least not according to our sense of one; the Chinese written language consists instead of thousands of different characters. A character usually stands for a word, sometimes for a syllable, and sometimes two or three characters together constitute a word. Thus, the Chinese child who has learned twenty-six characters has learned only the tiniest fraction of what must be learned to be literate. To read a newspaper requires knowing from ten fifteen or twenty thousand. So if you want to learn Chinese very well, it is necessary for you to remember thousands of words. What’s more, in terms of handwriting, Chinese is more difficult to write. There are only twenty-six letters in English that all the English vocabulary is composed of the twenty-six letters, so it is very easy for people to write. Instead of neat rows of 26 simple alphabetic letters, there are tens of thousands of unique characters formed with a varied number of strokes. Chinese characters are based on the hieroglyphs evolved over a long square. The Chinese vocabulary is huge in number and lack in regularity, so the writing of Chinese poses great difficulty for most people. If someone want to have a beautiful handwriting, he also need to practice more. The final difference between these two languages is their writing. Composing in Chinese need many proverbs in order to make composition more vivid and beautiful. Certainly, all language users rely on idioms and set phrases, but the Chinese seem always to rely upon them. so it is inevitable for Chinese learners to accumulate more proverbs. While compared with Chinese, English speakers and writers less depend upon these proverbs, they are less confined to such fixed expressions. All in all, unlike neat rows of 26 simple alphabetic letters, the difficulties of learning Chinese is created, in large part, by the number and form of the Chinese character. If someone want to learn Chinese, it is necessary for him to have a good memory.
