Would you add your parents on Wechat? This has become one of the biggest questions facing young Chinese in an age of unprecedented digital interconnection. In a poll conducted by the Huashang Bao newspaper in xi’an, 17 of 40 young people polled said they have added their parents on Wechat, but 14 blocked them from seeing their “friends’ circle”--a space where friends can share pictures and posts with one anther. It is obvious that only a few students are willing to add their parents on the Wechat according to the investigation. There are a variety of reasons why they don’t want to add their parents. In fact, the generation gap can’t be underestimated. Some students said they’re not comfortable with their parents combing through their everyday activities and photos, as their parents either don’t approve of the things they do for fun, or would constantly worry over what they consider unsafe or in appropriate behavior. Others say their friends’ circle are for friends of a similar age with similar interests, and their parents wouldn’t understand. Indeed, the reasons they have mentioned are true. But as a young college student, I insist my opinion that young people can be friends with their parents and adding their parents on Wechat is a good way to keep good relationship for students. First of all, social media is an efficient and informal way for children to keep in touch with their parents. Regular phone calls are still necessary, but with their social media parents can keep current on their children’s daily activities, so that they can have a deeply understanding and the generation gap can be reduced to some extent. Second, children often underestimate their parents’tech savvy due to the age differences. In fact, parents learn new things in a short period. Therefore, not only are many parents on social media like Wechat, many are also surprisingly understanding of young people’s thinking and lifestyles. Before automatically blocking their parents from their friends’ circle, young people should think twice. Third, many children have difficult relationships with their parents. Social media represents an opportunity to reboot those relationships. By treating each other as friends and equals on social media, families can overcome any previous sour feelings and work to rebuild their relationships. It is good to make a family harmony. All in all, social media is a good way for our students especially college students to communicate with their parents. If you can treat your parents as a good friends equally, your parents will also be willing to make friends with you. Try to open up for your parents happily instead of avoiding them.
