Task Direction:

You will have a choice between two Issue topics. Each topic will appear as a brief quotation that states or implies an issue of general interest. Read each topic carefully; then decide on which topic you could write a more effective and well-reasoned response.

You will have 45 minutes to plan and compose a response that presents your perspective on the topic you select. A response on any other topic will receive a zero. You are free to accept, reject, or qualify the claim made in the topic you selected, as long as the ideas you present are clearly relevant to the topic. Support your views with reasons and examples drawn from such areas as your reading, experience, observations, or academic studies.

GRE readers who are college and university faculty will read your response and evaluate its overall quality, based on how well you do the following
consider the complexities and implications of the issue
organize, develop, and express your ideas on the issue
support your ideas with relevant reasons and examples
control the elements of standard written English.

You may want to take a few minutes to think about the issue and to plan a response before you begin writing. Be sure to develop your ideas fully and organize them coherently, but leave time to reread what you have written and make any revisions that you think are necessary.

Section Direction:

Present your perspective on the issue below, using relevant reasons and/or examples to support your views.

Money spend on research is almost always a good investment, even when the results of that research are controversial. Financing and economy are increasingly popular majors. Many people long for the opportunity to start their own businesses or to invest in their own companies. The best investment, for them, is to maintain a greatest profit while they have only limited money in hand. Similarly, when we talk about whether the money spent on research is a good investment or not, one comparison that we should take in as our consideration is that whether this benefit can outweigh the average profit if the same amount of money is spent on different fields. In order for spending money on research to become a good investment, it must first, at least, brings profit to our daily lives and thus, society. Then may we compare its profit with that of using it otherwise. It is easy for us to accept that a research in seeking methods to perfect the vacuum cleaner, so that its gears will not be troubled by long hairs, or to invent a household robot, so housewives will no longer be occupied with chores all day, are good investments as they bring great ease and freedom to our daily schedule. However, for researches which ended up in huge catastrophes, people would probably feel that the researches were redundant, and that the money was better off doing something else. They would, in a sense, feel that these were not good bargains to make. Perhaps no other formula is as celebrated, and the same time notorious as the mass energy equation---e=mc2, considering its significant position in modern physics, or the disastrous aftermath of the nuclear bomb attack. Its destruction on the lives of the people in Japan was fatal, thousands were killed, and the contamination continues even till today. However, if we judge the formula from a business man’s perspective, it is probably advisable to say that it is indeed a “good investment”. The formula itself did not take much funds to be discovered, Einstein found out by much speculation and analysis from the data. Probably the only money that he spent was on his experimental devices, but this is minor, compared to the hundreds of thousands of watts of electricity being produced by nuclear electrical power plants every single day. The interest rate, which might as high as one hundred times the corpus, is probably higher than any of the companies ever erected on earth. We have always said that science and technology constitute the primary productive force. An investment in research, which will in turn benefit technology, is more worthy than an investment in many other areas. Thus, by considering the long-term effect, even when the immediate result of a research is negative; it is still able to bring us huge benefits in coming decades, making the bargain a good and worthy investment.
