Our brain, as our main information center, receives and processes hundreds of thousands of messages every day. We filter out the messages we need by the judgment of the brain of whether a piece of information is important for us, or whether it is relevant to our lives. As there is a lot of works for the brain to do, snap judgments are usually needed. People have long been talking about the negative side about snap judgments, that it is too rush to come to a conclusion without getting a whole picture of the problem, and that we are easily affected by our own biased presumptions. People tend to have a favor in good looking things than those who look hideous. However, even as children, we have been told that we should never judge a person by his looks. Our wide-spread fairytales tell the story of a beast with a good heart and an evil queen with a pretty face. We then come to the conclusion that demons may not always look fierce, but might sometimes disguise themselves in angles; and that an angles, might dress itself up in an ugly and hideous costume. This probably gives us the first impression that snap judgments is not always correct, but as we grow and step into society, some may go to an extreme that they will never trust any snap judgments. Snap judgments have bad reputations of impetuous and groundless, thus, we tend to stay away from it as far as we can possibly get. However, these people fail to see what benefits snap judgments are bringing us. Usually, hospitals will encounter emergencies when the injury for patients is so serious that they cannot possibly get a thorough check and they have to perform the operation at once. In this kind of situation, snap judgments come in use: a doctor must quickly deduce the possible problems and quickly select a better, if not the best, plan to save the patient. In this kind of situation, what matters is not whether snap judgment is trustworthy, but it has to be trusted. There is a chance that the patient lives if the judgment is correct and the operation proves to be quite smooth and successful; but the patient may die in waiting if he does not trusting in the judgment, and wait till the result of every single inspection come out. In this situation, whether or not snap judgment is trustworthy, it should be trusted, as it brings more chances to save a life. There is such a saying in Chinese, “state outside is based on mind inside”, which means that how a person looks is affected by his or her disposition. However ugly a person is, he will not look malicious if he is nice to people; similarly, a remarkably beautiful person will not look friendly if she has been cruel to others. Snap judgments are not, as we usually think, totally ungrounded. Less time probably means that there is a greater chance to make mistakes, but it does not necessarily make the possibility of being right zero. Besides, though fairytales tell us about Snow White’s mother and of the beast, both Snow White and Belle are beauties. This does not show that snap judgments are always right, but it does show that it is not always wrong. Snap judgments are not as bad as many people think, or probably, the idea of snap judgment can never be trusted is a snap judgment itself, out of many of the ones that are wrong indeed. However, there are times that snap judgments are correct, and if the price for not trusting the judgment is as equally serious as the judgment is wrong, it is still advisable that we trust this judgment: there may be a chance of achieving a better result.
