Our brain, as our main information center, receives and processes hundreds of thousands of messages every day. We can quickly filter the unwanted messages and save the useful ones as our brains determine whether a piece of information is important for us, or whether it is relevant to our lives. As there is a lot of works for the brain to do, snap judgments are usually needed. Though many people doubt their reliability, I believe, that they can be trusted in certain situations. People have long been talking about the negative side about snap judgments, that they are always too rush to come to a conclusion without getting a whole picture of the problem, and that we are easily affected by our own biased presumptions. People tend to have a favor in good looking things than those who look hideous. However, even as children, we have been told that we should never judge a person by his or her looks. Our fairytales tell us about a beast who became gentle and warm-hearted and a beautiful queen who is so cold-blooded that she wanted to kill her step-daughter. We then come to the conclusion that demons may not always look fierce, but might sometimes disguise themselves in angles; and that an angles, might dress itself up in an ugly and hideous costume. We learnt, as a result, that seeing is not everything. This probably gives us the first impression that an instant decision is not always correct. As we grow up, we are told by our parents and teachers that things were to be done steadily and rushing through things would only make things worse. We learn to spend a long time going through all the pros and cons of choosing our schools, subject combination, majors we learn in university and our careers. We expect as many conditions as possible, if not all, to be considered and taken into account. As snap judgments have always suffered bad reputations of impetuous and groundless, thus, many of us tend to stay away from it as far as we can possibly get. However, these people fail to see what benefits snap judgments are bringing us. Usually, hospitals will encounter emergencies when the injury for patients is so serious that they cannot possibly get a thorough check and they have to perform the operation at once. In this kind of situation, quick thinking and reaction come in use: a doctor must quickly deduce the possible problems and quickly select a plan to save the patient. In this kind of situation, what matters is not whether the determination is trustworthy, but it has to be trusted. There is a chance that the patient lives if the speculation is correct and the operation proves to be quite smooth and successful; but the patient may die in waiting for results if he does not trust the doctor’s deduction. Though the decision might be wrong, taking it as correct does not bring more harm than neglecting it. There is such a saying in Chinese, “state outside is based on mind inside”, which means that how a person looks is affected by his or her disposition. However ugly a person is, he will not look malicious if he is nice to people; similarly, a remarkably beautiful person will not look friendly if she has been cruel to others. Snap judgments are not, as we usually think, totally ungrounded. Less time spent on making a decision probably means that there is a greater chance to make mistakes, but it does not necessarily make the possibility of being right zero. Besides, though fairytales tell us about Snow White’s mother and of the beast, both Snow White and Belle are beauties, showing that pretty costumes may not be always helping to conceal evil thoughts. Snap judgments are not as bad as many people think. Probably, when people are listening to the story of Snow White, this idea came up to them as a snap judgment which is indeed incorrect. I disagree with the idea of not trusting them at all, considering their daily usage and its merits in saving people’s lives in danger.
