Christmas Gift ‘If only he would listen to me,’ she sobbed, ‘I could explain everything.’ Susan said as her father walked out of the room and slammed the door loudly. The sound, with its echoes, ran through the room from one side to another for several times before it finally disappeared. The room was now quiet, with nothing else but her whimpering could be heard. It was only one week before Christmas, but their family could not afford a grand party like before. They used to be rich, used to be, that is, not anymore. The family made a lot of money a few years ago, doing business. But then the financial crisis came and the family business broke down half a year ago. Her mother, couldn’t take such bad news, became seriously ill. Most of their savings of the former years was paid back to others for their debts. They also sold all their values they had in the house, yet they only had enough money to support their daily life. It was now impossible for the parents to buy anything that is not on the ‘must’ list. But then, Christmas was coming, and the girl felt that she had to do something for the family. They hardly ate well since the crisis and the girl had so much wanted her parents to be happy----she had never seen them smile after the company broke down. Gosh, she really wanted that smile of her parents’. In result of this, she found herself a job in a nearby restaurant. She never thought before that she was doing this: washing greasy plates and serve dishes to customers every day----one hour in the morning and another in the evening. The food, usually delicious, was extremely tempting for Susan, who rarely ate well and was always hungry. However, she knew what she wanted clearly, so she forced herself not to be moved by bringing books to the restaurant, and read them while washing the dirty and sometimes disgusting plates. She had to be very careful not to let her parents knew anything about this, she simply told them that she went to a park to study with her friends. Her parents, quiet caring about her, were afraid that she might be hungry. In spite of their shortage of money, they managed to give Susan one dollar every day for her to buy something to eat. Instead of spending the money, Susan saved all of them, as well as the money she got form her work. Therefore, she only ate two meals a day; only occasionally, she could get some leftovers from the restaurant. Even these leftovers, was considered luxury for her. Christmas was arriving and it began to snow. When one day, Susan got home and found her father already waiting for her in the living room. Apparently, he was trying to control his temper, but it was not easy. His hands held together tightly, and his lips trembling, anger filled his eyes, for he had just phoned Susan’s friend and discovered that Susan was not with her, nor did her the lots of days before. The father was angry and sad that after he had been so nice to his daughter, given her money every day but now, in his wrong belief, she turned to go out and play without even telling him. He had already lost his wit and began to behave irrationally, he gave his daughter no chance to explain, told her how much she had disappointed him, and left the room, leaving Susan alone in the room, crying. The father neither said another word to his daughter, nor did he seem to care about her daughter’s two-hour-absent every day since the day he scolded his daughter----he was so down, he once thought that although the world seemed to be against him, he still had his family, and more importantly, his daughter, caring for him. He would go through any crisis with his family on his side. Just imagine how shocked he felt when he knew that Susan, for all the times, had been lying to him! Christmas came in no delay, but the father was becoming less happy since he did not have much presents to give to his children. On Christmas Eve, the family members gathered for the meal (disappointing, though, to be honest), when Susan came back with a large plastic bag in her one hand, and a wallet in the other. The little kids was filled with curiosity and ran to see what was in the bag, and, to their surprise, was a big, fat and delicious roast turkey! They all felt themselves dreaming when Susan explained that all the time, she had been working and saving money for the Christmas surprise. She then presented the wallet, with the money left to her parents. It was now her mother’s turn to sob and her father, ashamed of having misunderstood his daughter and so much moved by what his daughter had done, hugged Susan with his strong and warm arms, wishing Susan would forgive him.
