The ‘P’ word follows the ‘I’ to our daily life. We used to spend immense time and energy focusing on inventing and industry, quite unaware of the fact that we have all the time been polluting the environment. Now it is time for us to pay the price and protect our home. China has taken many measures to make citizens environmentally conscious. It has banned free disposable plastic bags more than five years ago on June 1st, 2008, which received much response on international level. Some places in the country, for instance, Guangzhou and Changsha have already announced a banning for all kinds of disposable products. The government also puts up a lot of Public Service Advertisements (PSA) about environment protecting on television. People can be taught the importance of being environment-friendly when watching TV at home. China also calls on citizens to use less-polluting resources and to make less waste. Students are taught by their book of importance and various ways of environment protecting. Food wasting has always been a serious problem. A statistic showed the mass of protein lost in one year was about 8,000,000,000 kg, which would grant the need of 260,000,000 people in one year; fat wasting was about 3,000,000,000 kg, which would sustain 130,000,000 people’s lives. The government has favored a ‘clear your plate’ campaign, a non-governmental organization which calls on people to waste less food when eat, and calls on more citizens to contribute their efforts. Former Chinese Secretary of Commerce encouraged companies to label the amount of food on the package so that people would know which to choose instead of wasting food. In Jinzhou City, my hometown, a website, available for all citizens to log in, was set up for environment-protecting. The website provides hints in daily lives, and sometimes gives reports about the influences of the efforts made. One reports states that though cars are stepping into daily life, citizens still prefer to choose bicycles as their transportation. True enough; a bicycle shop not far from our school is always crowded with people. One said he enjoyed riding a bicycle as he could not only exercise himself, but also could contribute to building a more environment-friendly society. He also stated that he felt proud to make his effort. Banners to inform people to pay attention to environment have been set up in many public places like schools and parks. Schools organize activities to make students more environmentally conscious. The city also held competitions for ‘environmental-friendly school’ to attract more students. A statistic in 2010 showed that people were more and more satisfied in environmental protecting during the past four years. The number of people satisfied was 3.94% higher than that of 2009. There are more factual ways to encourage people. Lots of dustbins have been placed in the city, and you will find one easily without having to walk for a long way. In many restaurants, sterilized chopsticks have taken place of disposable ones. The government has planted more flowers and trees to show the beauty of nature to both strike people and to give them the idea of devoting themselves to start protecting the environment.
