Last night, Changi International Airport was in a state of emergency as Pandora Airlines flight 164 was hijacked about 9.30 p.m. One crew was injured but fortunately no one was killed. The Pandora Air Bus SQ left Kuala Lumpur Malaysia for Singapore at 9p.m. yesterday. The plane, with 121 passengers and 13 crew members on board, was hijacked by four Pakistani en route to Singapore before it arrived at 9.25 p.m. Having been arrested, the Pakistanis declared that they were all members of Pakistani Liberation Front (PLF), a terrorist group formed in 1977. These young and armed men managed to disguise themselves as passengers and were able to get on board. When the plane was on the way, they pulled out daggers and knives from their jackets and suitcases, and threatened to kill the crews unless the crews obey them. One of the crews tried to reason with them, but was hit sharply in the face. These men demanded release of twelve PLF prisoners together with a plane to Australia before the deadline of 10.00 p.m. Unless the government meet their requirements, they threatened to kill the hostages. Commandos were called in, but they did not carry out the rescue mission until the Minister of Home Affairs arrived at the scene. He tried to negotiate with the hijackers that the government would release six prisoners in exchange for the safety of all on board the plane, but his request was neglected. Without any choice, the commandos attacked at precisely 9.49p.m. Being well-trained, they stormed into the plane and shot the hijackers who were easy to identify from their appearance. It was all over in 6 minutes, killing one of the hijackers. It was nearly 50 minutes before the passengers were evacuated, the injured crew was sent to the nearest hospital and staff cleaned the plane and the body of the Pakistani. By 10.45, everything was back to normal. David Woods, a passenger, said, ‘I was shocked when I saw what happened. The hijackers had knives in their hands. We couldn’t move and I was really afraid.’ Another eye-witness, Tracy Brown claimed that the hijackers were too violent. ‘The crew had just stood up, but he was knocked down at once. I hope he is okay.’ George Dawson, the crew who was injured, is now being treated in the hospital and is recovering soon. ‘I was about to go home when receiving the emergency alarm. The pilot, James, was smart. He pressed the button so that we could hear the hijackers as they threatened them on the plane.’ One of the staff, who would not like his name to be known, said when being interviewed after the night. The Minister of Home Affairs, Mr. Kerry, stated earlier this morning that he felt fortunate that no serious hurt was caused during the incident. However, he also pointed out that the security was slack and investigation should be carried out to find out exactly what had happened. ‘You may know that these Pakistani hijackers were armed with knives and daggers, which were smuggled into the plane. And that is strictly forbidden.’ The minister called on stricter rules for security checking. He also insisted on finding out how these hijackers got onto the plane. Mr. Kerry has met with his Malaysian counterpart earlier this morning. The hijackers, as he mentioned, should be forbidden to be smuggled onto the plane. Security check in Malaysian airport was slack, claimed Mr. Kerry, as the men were able to hide their daggers inside. His counterpart in Malaysia suggested the hijackers had been prisoners. It was reported, five days ago, that three PLF members broke out from Malaysian prison with the help of another. This suggestion was later confirmed by the young men. The man who was shot dead, Mohammed Carper, was a new member of the PLS. The other three, were brothers and friends of Mohammed, and was able to break out with Carper’s help. The three men was brought to court after the hijack and each got a life-long sentence. The United Nations Security Council announced that security check should be stricter to avoid similar incidents.
