If you think that what you do is your own business, you are wrong. In this world your conduct affects not only you but the conduct of other people as well. If you behave in a way that is considered unacceptable and other people copy your behavior, you are responsible for the consequences. Is a person responsible, through the example he or she sets, for the behavior of other people? We all live in families and belong to communities and we constantly interact with the people around us. During these interactions we influence others and are influenced by others. My friends influence the activities I do, the music I listen to and even the values I have. Other people constantly bring(introduce) us to new ideas, some of which we accept and others we dismiss. Sometimes the influence is direct (in the form of ）a recommendation, a suggestion, or advice. Other times, the influence is more indirect(and we may subconsciously copy someone when making choice.) I have no doubt that every choic we make is, to some degree, the result of an external influence. Certain members of society, like celebrities, may have an particularly strong and widespread influence on the behavior of others, even to the extent that people will act irrationally. In Hong Kong, for instance, when Jackie Chan mentioned a particularly brand of wine during a television interview, it is claimed that every shop sold out within 24 hours. But if someone chooses to copy a celebrity's bad habits, for instance taking drugs, can society hold the celebrity responsible? Of course not. As long as an alternative option exists, behavior is a choice because we could choose to do something else. People chose to buy the wine that Jackie Chen mentioned and, if they had wanted to, they could have bought anther brand or no wine at all. Likewise, if all my friends encourage me to do something bad, I have the choice to follow them or not follow them. As long as no one threatens or coerces me in some way, I am exercising my free will when I make choices; individual responsibility for those choices is the price of freedom. When someone excercises free will, he or she alone is responsible for the consequences of doing so. We cannot be responsible for how other people choose to behave because then no one would be responsible for anything. Without individual responsibility, anyone could do anything. Criminals would not be responsible for their crimes and so could not be punished, and society would fall apart. However, there is an exception and that is children. I believe we are responsible if children copy our examples because they are not fully developed and do not have the same capacity as adults to distinguish right from wrong.
