Recently, employees at a big city’s subway station are exuberant at learning dialects so as to attract customers from the rest of the country. It has stirred debates widely. Proponents reason that it is a stone hitting two birds, since it is reckoned to both enhance job proficiency and promote dialects. But the opponents see it as a countering factor to slow the spread of Mandarin over the country. From my viewpoint, it is rejuvenating to see employers of all stripes to encourage their staff to master several dialects, which produces anything but demerits. The opponents should take it by heart that the policy to advocate Mandarin has been implemented over several decades. It is self-evident to see Mandarin has long been the unwavering dominance in public speeches, daily communications and school teachings. Barely any downwardness of Mandarin has shown as a prime agenda on any front-paged editorial. The unpopularity of Putonghua in a few rural areas, as one of the major problems left over, is only a matter of education and rate of literary, as long as our nation keeps on investing more in helping rural inhabitants educated. In other words, promoting Putonghua is the least agenda worth concerns. Reiterating the importance of Putonghua has lost its necessity in primary school education and obedience of public codes, especially in big cities. We ought to have it in mind that the employees’ endeavour merely came as a business strategy. Besides, it makes, awkwardly, a trifle progress to promote dialects. Some of the dialects in our country are supposed to be on the wane under the dominance of Putonghua. The admirable Guangdong and Hong Kong governments are, till now, sparing no efforts in maintaining the popularity of Cantonese, even down to the saving of those time-tested traits of Cantonese in both the vernacular and official form. Most interestingly, even a Guangdong teen student’s slight stray from the standard accent can arouse humiliation over his family. To the opposite, Shanghai and some other first tier cities, unfortunately, are shorn of the uniform efforts to keep the purest form of their dialects. A case out of the other resembling ones is when a Shanghainese pupil student is undergone an interview, he always comes up first the Putonghua or utters continually his under-standard local accent, mixed with more excellent Putonghua. Pro-dialect restorers are expecting a long lane that someday will have its turn, but the turn never emerges above their horizon. The employers hit in the curiosity of us, but hardly our realization. Maintaining and furthering dialects, for one thing, needs freshening its staging forms. For another, school teachings should never lag behind. A sea change is the result of slight changes.
