It is known that Chinese belongs to Sino-Tibetan language family, English Indo-European family; therefore they are of typical difference in culture and formation. In culture, the differences can be divided into two aspects: religion and social values. Christianity has a long history in Western countries and plays a dominant role in Western culture. Christianity has influenced Western culture in various aspects. For westerners, Christianity is sacred and inviolable, and every religious word should be holy and mentioned indirectly. Consequently, there are a lot of religious euphemisms emerging. For instance, in the eighteenth century, “God” is euphemized as Golly, the king of kings. Many religious euphemisms for “die” such as “to be asleep in the Arms of God”, “to be in Abraham’s bosom” and “to cross the River Styx”. Comparatively speaking, in Chinese culture, ethics of feudal society plays a significant role rather than religion. Therefore, religion has hardly influenced Chinese culture and religious euphemisms cover a narrow scope in Chinese. In Western social values, “a man’s home is his castle.” In other words, Westerner pays more attention to self. Their daily topics hardly cover one’s private life like age, weight, marriage, rich and poor and so on. For example, “poverty” means shame and low social status for Westerners. Hence, it is replaced by “disadvantaged”, “man of modest means” and “negative saver”. However, in Chinese culture, the word “poverty” is not so much tabooed as in western culture. In traditional Chinese culture, people think that a great man should not overly care about money. English euphemism has its unique construction means. It can be formed by use of phonetic device and spelling device, whereas Chinese euphemism focuses on lexical device. For instance, shilly-shally, similar to the phone of “Shall I? Shall I?” means the act of procrastinating. VD is the acronym of “venereal disease”. If the above words are rendered into Chinese, the translator cannot keep the same flavor and just use the original meaning.
