This thesis used an empirical study to find out number errors of nouns in junior students and took the grade eight students in the No.9 Middle School of Huainan as the subjects. Its aims were:(1) to show the current situation of grade eight students about using nouns in single and plural forms; (2) to explore the causes of errors; (3) to give suggestions to avoid these errors. Through analysis, such results could be reached as following:1) there were 5 main errors committed by junior students , the errors were A: uncountable nouns with no -s, B: collection errors between uncountable nouns and determiner, C: countable nouns without determiner, D: countable nouns with -s and E: collection errors between plural nouns and determiner, especially the error of type D: countable nouns with -s was committed most frequently. 2) According to the research, there were 3 factors that caused these errors, which were inter-lingual factor, intra-lingual factor and environmental factor. What’s more, inter-lingual error also called mother tongue interference was the main cause. 3) the author pointed out that junior students should understand English culture and make a distinction between the form and meaning of nouns, what’s more, knowledge of teachers or textbooks should be improved.
