It is well- known that the westerners attach great importance to privacy. They are self-centred and take it for granted that their individual interests cannot be invaded at anytime. For example, in the west, when visiting someone, we need to make an appointment,it is impolite to make a sudden visit. In recent yeas the people of our country especially politicians began to make an appointment before they are going to visit someone, but relatively speaking, we do not take it too seriously. There is a proverb which gives a clear explanation of the importance of privacy. "A man's home is his castle". It means that the home is significant and personal to him, and he will never suffer it to be violated. The western people may not like these questions such as age, income, marriage and other individual matters. They are reluctant to talk about these topics with others, because these issues are related to the personal circumstance, which is regarded as their own business. When communicating with westerners, we should avoid asking them about private information like salary, marriage, love, phone number, weight and so forth. These behaviors are the interferences. But as for the Chinese people, it is an universal phenomenon that people talk about income, civil state, age and so on. The relationship among people becomes close because of the traditional living habitudes. Privacy about verbal behaviors here I will introduce includes greeting, income and age. Greeting is an automatic reaction in daily life. When Chinese meet together, the common topics usually involve much personal information such as work, family, marriage, salary, age and ancestral home to show concern and friendliness. For instance, Chinese peopleare are used to saying“whereare you going?” or “what are you doing?”. Actually, they don’t really concern about your private affairs, it is more out of habits. In western countries, you should avoid asking the personal information like age, wage, marital status and lifestyle. Because westerners want to have their own private spaces and do not like tomention too much about themselves. What’s more, there are laws about privacy toprotect their rights of privacy. Foreigners usually start a conversation with “ how are you?”, “good morning! ”, “what’s up?”. In greeting, they prefer t o talk about weather, sports and so on. These topics are frequently used on many accasions ,and there is no worry about whether violate the privacy of others or not.
