When it comes to income, “how much do you earn?”, “what is the price of your dress?” can be usually asked by in Chinese people. However, westerners are not willing to discuss the precise number of salary even with close friends, much less with strangers.In western, personal income is the reflex of personal ability. Avoiding such sensitive questions shows the esteem to one’s privacy and dignity. But that does not mean that they do not discuss the salary, when looking for a job, people will talk abut the treatment of different work to find out whether they are fairly treated in the same working place. The last one is age, which is a strange topic. Chinese people hold that age is indication of experience and knowledge, and the society call for people to respect old people. You can easily get the answer when asking old people about age, even proudly with pleasure, but as for westerners, even they are indeed old, they do not want to admit it. In the western countries, for young people especially for women, the word “age” becomes a taboo, it is a sensitive topic and may cause embarrassment and bring about unpleasant. It’s the same case with Chinese, so avoiding asking age is avoiding misunderstanding. Showing enough respect to cultural diversity helps avoiding prejudice, and what we should bear in mind is the famous saying,”when in Rome, do as the Romans do.”
