Color terms play an important role in the cross-cultural communication and translation,therefore, we should study and grasp different color expressions between English and Chinese. 3.1 The Connotation of Red in Chinese and Western Cultures The red color is the strongest one of all kinds of colors for the person’s eyes and brains. For Chinese people, red is the favorite color, it represents the joyous meaning and happiness. While in the western counties, it is connected with violence and anger. The most important color for the Chinese is the red color, it is used in a positive sense. In China, the red color is our country’s essential cultural color, which indicates the Chinese material and spirit pursuit. It is associated with good luck and is used for decoration, dressing and wedding. Red is connected with communism in both English and Chinese. In some capitalistic countries its meaning is degraded on account of some political reason, so the western politician may be alert to “red”. The positive use of “red” in English is very limited, the red color is not always connected with something cheerful, instead, it is often used in nagative sense. Some Westerners take “red” as a symbol of evil or danger, origining from the spirits of bullfighters. So the red rag or flag that bullfighters use to provoke the bull is regarded as annoying. Moreover, red has some extensional meanings, such as cruelty,blood,disaster, etc. In English we can find such expressions that stand for radicalness and violence like “the red revolution”, “the red activities”, etc.
