The Chinese and western dietary culture has different features due to the influence of repsective cultural tradition. In English countries, eating is taken as a way of communication and necessary survival means. The concept of people from English countries varies from that of the Chinese. As for English people,eating just plays a life-sustaining role in their life. In China,eating is very important, it goes through a man’s whole life. For example, a birth celebration would be held when one was born. When he grows up, he would have birthday parties, wedding party. What’s more, he would invite friends and relatives to have dinner together when he moves into a new house. The forms of eating embody some profound social meanings. Food taboos both involve the content of the diet and the eating way. Hinduism envy with eating beef, Islam envy with eating pork, Buddhist envy with eating all kinds of meat.In China, when eating, people envy with using chopsticks beat bowl,while in west,the knife and fork envy with making noise. Generally speaking, Westerners envy with animal's internal organs, fat, chicken and duck's skin, snake meat, dog meat, and so on. In the eating way regard, westerners drink the soup envy with making noise, they envy with gobble, in particular, envying with striking the cup by using knife and fork,because they think it would bring bad luck; it is a taboo to left food in plate when eating buffet. The Chinese people envy that the seats not divide primary and secondary whenthey have a dining, at the same time, they envy with inserting chopsticks in bowl filledwith rice, since it is considered a sacrifice to the deceased ; moreover, they envy with flipping bowl on the table, because it stands for cursing someone to fall ill; they envy with use chopsticks to beat the spatial bowl, because it is bummer's behavior; the people living in the seashore, who think that it is a taboo to turn fish over, when eating fish, because it manifests shipwreck, they believe it would bring bad luck to them. There are all kinds of wine in western countries, but they would not drink too much. Before meal, they usually drink aperitif, and after dinner drink whiskey or cocktail. Besides, they always drink champagne to celebrate. In a banquet, Chinese people generally not drink many kinds of liquor. They usually sit around a table eating and drinking, talking and entertaining. This creates an atmosphere of happiness, unity and politeness. Delicious dishes are put in the middle of the people and become the media by which people can exchange their feelings and emotions. They toast to each other with great joy. Although this kind of table manners apparently has its big defects in terms of hygiene standard, it accords with the the Chinese common idea of great union. It also indicates the influence of the classical philosophy has on the descendants of Chinese people. In the west, people have their dinner in an entirely different way. From the old time until now, westerners have never eaten food in the same plate or bowl. Every one of them has his own share of the food which is put in his own plate. This shows the strong individuality in their culture.
