A Farewell to Arms was created in 1929 with refined language to criticize the absurd and irrational war. A Farewell to Arms tells the story about the First World War. Frederic Henry, an American ambulance driver serves for the Italian army, having a life with pleasure, drinking and sex, lives a relaxed lifestyle. Initially, Henry doesn’t think that he will be influenced by this war as there is nothing to do with him. Catherine Barkley, a duteous, kind British nurse who has just lost her fiance. They meet in the hospital. At the beginning, Henry just wants to molest her to pass the boring time of war. Because of being wounded in a battle, he once again meets her in the hospital in Milan. Under the care of Catherine, Henry begins to recover slowly and falls in love with Catherine Barkley and they have a transitory good time. During the medical treatment, Catherine is pregnant. At this time, the front line is conquered constantly. With the wound healed completely, Henry has to return to the front line. When Henry returns to the front, he finds that the Italian army is riddled with failure and despair. The German attack finally breaks down military resistance and the Italian army begins to collapse. The anti-war enthusiasm is full of soldiers, Henry has no choice but draws back. In front of a bridge, the Italian army military police forces begin to arrest the “so-called” officers and shoot, Henry unfortunately is among them. When they question the others, Henry jumped into the river and managed to escape the fate of being executed. He finally realizes that his duty as a soldier being along with the river is washed away. At this time, he only wants to find Catherine and has a peaceful live. After lots of hardships, he finally flees away from the misery of war. Henry comes to Milan and finds that Catherine has went on a holiday to a border town. Henry is desperate to find Catherine and they get together again. However, under Italian police chase, they have to escape to Switzerland. Henry and Catherine have a happy time in Switzerland. When Catherine gave birth to a child, both of Catherine and her child died because of a difficult labor in the end. Henry goes back to the hotel lonesomely and woefully in the night with the heavy rain. A Farewell to Arms is a love tragedy. In the novel, Hemingway used a lot of symbolism to deepen the theme of the work.
