At the very start of the story, Ernest Hemingway presents a mobile picture in which thousands of people are moving and acting. It not only starts the story, but also sets the basic tune, a destructive tune of the whole novel. And moreover, it arranges a series of images for the later development of symbolism. The first sentence of the paragraph of the novel puts the reader in the house from whose window he looks across the river and plain to the mountains in the distance. Maybe the readers have not realized it, but the mountain and the plain have appeared softly. The second sentences draws readers’ attention from the mountains to the river and produces a feeling of clear, dry, wide and full of sunshine. The river extends finely, under the dealing of the author until it is connected with one of the important symbols—the mountain. The writer describes a picture of pastoralism and peaceful life. When they flees to Switzerland, they have a rough journey in the lake, they have to fight against the blustery and ruthless rain, not to say the chase from Italy police. However, they are still hopeful when they row a small boat, Hemingway writes in this way: “When the moon came out again we could see white villas on the shore on the slopes of the mountain and the white road where it showed through the trees.” (Ernest Hemingway, 1929, 1) Here he makes the mountain as a scared place without battle and death. After they arrived there, they settled in “a brown wooden house in the pine trees on the side of the mountain and at night there was frost so that there was thin ice over the water in the two pitchers on the dresser in the morning (Ernest Hemingway, 1929, 235). Life is easy and cozy, and everything around here is pure and fine. Mountains provide the best circumstance and cut off evil from the cruel war. They act just like the most common couple in the world and enjoy happiness, and everything seems to be nice. All the time the mountain is associated with happiness and peaceful life once more.
