Compared with mountain, the image of plain appears rarely at the very beginning. With the development of plot,the symbolism of plain has completely different meaning with mountain. It is always the symbol of destruction, messy war and death. The priest is from mountain area who is on behalf of decent, honest and love God. The captain who comes from lowland just makes boring jokes and has little brief in God. At the beginning of the book, When the priest suggests Henry to go to Abruzzi, a beautiful and rustic place, the captain just interrupts him and says that they should go whorehouse before it shuts. There is a obvious comparison between mountain and plain. What is more, when Henry retreats through the countryside, he and the other drivers stop at an abandoned farmhouse to rest, however, the girls they saved at a town refuse to go in, as they can feel little sense of security. When they get closed to Udine, they come cross the German troop in an open field where nothing can provide the necessary protection. They have no choice but to be outgunned by emery fire. As a result, Aymo, Henry’s driver, is shot and dead disastrously. “Aymo lay in the mud with the angle of the embankment. He was quite small and his arms were by his side, his puttee-wrapped legs and muddy boots together, his cap over his face.”(Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms 162). Reading through the whole novel, the plain is haunted with an unsafe feeling. The evacuation what happened in the plain is destructive. Everywhere is filled with the abandoned tracks, houses, carriages and the downhearted soldiers, the numb refugees and dead bodies. Police keep firing and lose their minds, all the things are at a mess and the plain turns to be a hell, everything is covered by suffering and horror. Similarly, the couple flee to Switzerland and have a short peaceful life in the mountain. Unfortunately, it is a time for her to give birth to a child, they decide to move to Lausanne, a big town located in the plain where Catherine died for parodynia. It seems to be an unpredictable disaster, but as a tragic love story, Hemingway makes all the disaster have an inner relationship with plain. In other words, it is the plain that makes the whole story more miserable. The plain as the miserable imagine, deepen the theme of the novel in an inconspicuous way.
