The city of Gorizia, where Henry is stationed, is separated from the Austrian by a river. During the troops retreat in the book, Henry and his companies are trapped on the enemy side of the river, a place where the distinction between allies and opponents becomes blurred. When Henry is assumed to be an Austrian in an Italian uniform, Henry escapes being executed by jumping into the river. Henry and Catherine escape to the neutral country of Switzerland by rowing across Lake Maggiori. In the novel water symbolizes new, clean life that Henry is going to live a new life after escaping from the war. In the novel water is also depicted as a way for Henry to escape. Hemingway uses rivers and lakes repeatedly as an escape device. When Henry’s escape gained success by way of lake, Henry sees the lights of the hotel he is rowing out until they cannot see the lights. River becomes a conspicuous turning point in the story when Henry jumps into the river. It signs his departure from the life of a man in the army and it represents anger is washed away in the river along with any obligation. This left him free of any connection to the Italian army or to anything associated with it, at least in his mind. More symbolically, water provides clarity for Henry when he is in a dilemma. One the other hand, the image of water is an important part in the Bible which is called “ spring water” in The Old Testament. As everybody knows, there is a Baptism, which the one who is being baptized is symbolically drowned in the old world and awakens to a new world on the opposite shore His dive indicates Henry’s self-discovery of the absurdity of the war. Thus the self-discovery becomes a new theme in the novel.
