The lovers are apart by war and rain witnesses the goodbye. Rain as a nature’s sign strengthens the sadness. In other hand, rain forebodes their tragedy in the future, to some extent, rain also reveals the damage that made by the war and hit the theme. In the third part of the whole novel, the rain also appears frequently. When Henry gets back to the battlefield, the solution gets worse and worse. They have an uncontrolled retreat. there is little military discipline to limit the soldiers and they just run for life. Police could shoot anyone who is supposed to be spy without investigation. And in this part, all the scene is filled with rain:“They did not come......the gusts of wind and rain.” “I felt the rain on......the flakes were coming heavy and fast in the rain.” “......when daylight came the stormy......Now it was raining again.” (Ernest Hemingway, 1929, 146) It seems wherever rain appears, it accompanies with the destruction. Death is also marked by rain. Catherine is the first person who has a specific feeling about rain. when she tells Henry that she is afraid of the rain: “I see me dead in it.” (Ernest Hemingway, 1929, 126) Those words imply miserable fate of Catherine. Of course, no meteorological phenomenon has such power, symbolically, Catherine’s fear proves to be prophetic, for doom does eventually come to the couple. Here, the falling rain validates Catherine’s anxiety and confirms one of the novel’s main contention: great love, like anything else in the world--good or bad, innocent or deserving--can last. At last, when Catherine is dying, Hemingway does not have a direct description about Henry, Instead, the novel ends with the word “rain” as the only hint of the highlight, the the authorends the novel with the following words: “After a while I went out and left the hospital and walked back to the hotel in the rain.”
