In addition, Henry describes the priest’s home region of Abruzzi as a place “where the roads were frozen and hard as iron, where it was clear and cold and dry and the snow was dry and powdery...”(Ernest,Hemingway,1929:17) Readers can easily portray a small countryside picture with snow, a world without conflict. When Henry separates from Catherine and goes back to the battle, he can see two ranges of mountains, green and dark to the snow line and then white in the sun. Henry is slow far away from the mountains and snow, in a way, Henry is saying goodbye to the peaceful life. Snow also plays an very important role when Henry and Catherine have a happy life in Switzerland. When they finally sets down in a hotel, they have a good mood: “Snow did not come until three days before Christmas. We woke one morning and it was snowing. We stayed in bed with the fire roaring in the stove and watched the snow fall.” (Ernest Hemingway, 1929, 222) What a typical scene of Christmas, that is what life should be. In this part, the snow is falling all the time until the coming of spring and rain with the disappearance of snow, which imply the happy life almost comes to an end. In the story, snow appears as clearness, coldness and dryness which symbolize the peaceful and happy life. To a certain degree, snow also symbolize an idyllic dream in the mind of war-wounded people.
