In A Farewell to Arms, the t author also gives people different symbolic meanings. Everyone is different from each other and represents specific attitude and reaction towards the war. We can rethink the war through the vivid characters Catherine is the most gentle, the kindest, the most romantic and the most courageous women in all the Hemingway’s works. As for symbolism, she is the idealized representation of Hemingway of wife and family. What make her become woeful is her experience which mainly focus on her marriage. In the novel, she tries her best to pursue happiness and puts all her heart in Henry. Unfortunately, she cannot receive the prefect love which is supposed to be. At the end of the novel, Catherine died tragically and fails to get the happiness. She is willing to contribute all to love. She is loyal for her lover and fears to lose love. There are many evidences which can reflect her own understanding about love. When Catherine first shows up, her fiancé was just died in the battle, which gets she feels guilty all the time. At that time, Catherine is a traditional girl and has a beautiful illusion for pure love. Catherine is a tough lady, but the death of her fiancé has an inestimable influence on her. The death of her fiancé almost destroys her dream. At the first stage of their love, Henry is not fling himself into the relationship, but to kill time and gain extra advantage unfairly. He said, “I know I do not love Catherine Barkley nor have any idea of loving her, this is a game, like bridge, in which what you said instead of playing cards.” (Ernest Hemingway, 1929, 18) Henry even has little feelings about Catherine and just regards this as recreation which is totally different from Catherine. She immediately perceives Henry’s cynical attitude to love: Catherine: “This is a rotten game we play, isn’t it?” Henry: “what game?” Catherine: “Don not be dull. You play it as well as you know how. But it is a rotten game.” (Ernest Hemingway,1929, 18) We can say that Catherine is clever and talent, she has a clear cognition about Henry’s thoughts and changes his mind to the reality little by little, Henry falls in love with Catherine and gains the pure love. Because of Catherine, both of them can get the love and she is the tutor for Henry. He recalled : “My life was once full.” He told Catherine: “If you leave me now, I have nothing in the world.”(Ernest,Hemingway,1929:127) Thus it can be proved the importance of Catherine. Catherine is also more mature than Henry, before his operation, Henry asks Catherine to be on duty that night so that they may again make love, not realizing the seriousness of the surgery or of this postoperative station. Nor is he aware of the danger in enlisting in the Italian army just because he happens to be in Rome when Italy enters the War. He also insists that he will not talk under the anesthetic. Catherine replies, “Now you are bragging, darling. You know you don’t need to brag. You sleep like a little boy with your arm around the pillow.” (Ernest,Hemingway,1929:83) Catherine sacrifices much for their love. When Henry gets injured, she takes the night duty to look after him. When she gets pregnant, she comforts Henry by telling him that she is not eager for a decent marriage. When he has to flee to Switzerland, she gives up her career as a competent nurse and her friends go with him. As an active part in love, Catherine breaks the traditional sexual taboos to achieve her full humanity and creates a new great lady. Her rationality, subjectivity, and individuality extend great influence on Henry’s love for her. When they prepare to escape, Henry feels: that we had come home, feeling no longer alone,...I have been alone while I was many girls and that is the way that you can be mostly lonely. (Ernest,Hemingway,1929:219) Catherine gives all her love to Henry. At the end of the novel, Catherine shows remarkable courage and human dignity. She is suffering huge pain and has a dour fight with the pain. Even when she is about dying, she still focus on Henry and they have an impressive conversation. “Just you,” she said. Then a little later, “I'm not afraid. I just hate it.” “You must not talk so much,” the doctor said. “All right,” Catherine said. “Do you want me to do anything, Cat? Can I get you anything?” Catherine smiled, “No.” Then a little later, “You won't do our things with another girl, or say the same things, will you?” “Never.” “I want you to have girls, though.”(Ernest Hemingway,1929, 248) At the end of life Catherine shows extraordinary courage and her death let Henry has a deep understanding of death. Catherine’s devotion and dedication in love and her kindness, loyalty and bravery make Henry discover the meaning of life in the world. Henry seems to be helpless and panicky. He denies to accept the ruthless truth, as for Catherine, she acts like a person to talk about everyday matters with a graceful smile. The obvious distinction makes Catherine become the most bravest man. Finally Henry gets the nurses out and shut the door in order to go together with Catherine alone, and tries hard to help her who is loved by him deeply. However, there is nothing can do to save his beloved woman. On the one hand, the death of Catherine makes herself become more impressive, on the other hand, she makes the plot of the novel to the climax and states clearly the weakness of human being: no one can escape from fate, everyone is doomed to ruin. Obviously, Catherine appears as a modern, independent young woman in the novel. Indeed, Catherine’s intelligence and resourcefulness make her in the category of confident and competent characters. The qualities of her gentleness and obedience are just a superficial phenomenon; it is her maturation, wisdom, courage and faith that Hemingway wants to show readers. The staunch willpower, indomitable spirit, and her deep comprehension to life, her realization to war and her courage before tragic faults and she shows are the portray of “code hero”. Her “grace under pressure” is the match of what she acts in the front of the misery. She is the symbol of “cold hero”. The world breaks everyone and afterwards many are strong at the broken places
