Henry is serious and angry, he does not allow anyone to slander Catherine. He is trying his best to protect her. When the German troops make a fierce attack, Henry is not interested in the war anymore and hopes to stay with Catherine. He misses Catherine so much that he thinks about her even in the dream. Henry doesn’t know what true love is. In eleventh chapter of the novel, the priest goes to the field hospital to visit Henry. The priest tells him what true love is: “When you love, you wish to do things for, and you wish to serve.”(Ernest,Hemingway,1929:128) At their relationship develops, he gradually knows what love is. He tries to protect Catherine, While Catherine pregnant, he asks her to marry him to maintain her reputation, when Catherine is going to give birth to a child, he recommends them to move to the bigger town where is near hospital. He is willing to accept suggestions to make Catherine happy. For instance, he wears beard for a long time. Love becomes an indispensable part of his life. When Catherine is in danger, he prays the God that he would do anything if the God would not take Catherine away. He even hate his own baby as the child makes Catherine suffered so much pain. He understands what true love is and learns to sacrifice for love.
