Henry is one of the most important characters in this novel. The author expresses his own view through Henry. In the first place, Henry shows no revulsion or weariness before he is wounded. His attitude towards war is that he is an onlooker. He once says Henry is just blindly moved by the American government’s slogan, “save the world for democracy” .He has a huge enthusiasm to search for some values and do something special. But the harsh reality of war mix up the question and he loses his own faith in life. As the war goes on, by talking with soldiers and what he has experienced, Henry begins to form his view on the war. That can be seen from the following paragraphs: “There is nothing as bad as war, We in the auto-ambulance cannot even realize at all how bad it is. When people realize how bad it is,they cannot do anything to stop it, become they go crazy. They are some people who never realize.” “There is a class that control a country that is stupid and does not realize anything and never can. This is why we have this war.” (Ernest Hemingway,1929, 45) When he is wounded in the dugout, he does not see the war clearly until Rinaldi visits him and tells him he would be decorated. The government may reward him the silver medal as he could offer any evidences to prove he has acted like a hero. At last, Henry still gets the medal without any statements. The event makes change his mind, the war should have be fight for glory, but the truth is that there is little glory but unnecessary sacrifices。 Whatever, he still sticks to his position. As a lieutenant, Henry is responsible for the army. He follows and gives order as required and falls into the drinking or whoring routine with the other officers in his spare time. As an ordinary young man, he is generous and would like to help others but rarely succeeds. For instances, he tries to help the corrupted solider who wants to be out of the war, but the plan that the solider gets wound by himself doesn’t work. When Henry and his drivers rest and reorganization in the trench, Henry is busy seeking foods for his unit. After the shelling, he attempts to rescue a driver, however, he died before Henry could save him. When Henry retreats from the front line, among the four people at last on foot to Udine, on is killed, another surrenders to be prisoner. Things seems to be uncontrolled. Even at this moment, Henry still thinks about his duty. He simply thinks that all he can do is to get to Pordenone with three ambulances. He struggles hard with little effect in the war. These episodes show Henry still acted as a professional soldier. He still has fancy for the war and he is always on his duty. However, everything changes when he is arrested and is sentenced to death for his accent of speaking Italian. At the moment of waiting to be killed, he suddenly, completely realizes how ridiculous the war is. Facing the threat of death, Henry betrays his duty as a soldier, plunges into the icy river and escapes. In the icy water, he completely sees the ridiculous, hypocrite world though. All the hope and belief collapse. He understands that he and many soldiers are just tools and sacrifices subjects in the benefit fighting. Anger and duty are washed away in the river long with any obligation. Finally, he breaks with the war. He does not want to talk about the war anymore. In a word, Henry is a tragedy character in the novel, suffered by the war, Henry escapes war decisively and turns to love. It is a place that gives him a shelter to live both mentally and physically. But life is a tragedy too. Henry goes forwards to achieve goals again and again. However he fails when goals are in front of his eyes. He suffers with a lot to pursue the dream and love. As a result, he is totally confused for the world. He applied himself to end the fight as soon as possible. Conversely, the fighting was continuing because of involvement of more young people like Henry. Nobody would be a winner and the war had destroyed human being’s belief. The world would become more indifferent and colder. Henry’s personal tragedy reflects the 20th century generation’s psychology. They encounter the same misfortune and do not know how to settle it as Henry. Henry can not escape the bound of destiny in the most dangerous situation---war, as well as in the most romantic situation---love, and finally heads to destruction.
