Symbolism is also connected with some other people in A Farewell to Arms. Henry’s two closet friends are put as the symbol of morality. The priest is the representation of church and the life of the spirit; Rinaldi is the representation of medical science, reason, and the life of the flesh. The doctor holds out salvation of physiological; the priest holds out salvation of the soul. Unfortunately, both of them are trapped in the cruel war. The young Italian doctor Rinaldi, who is a merry comrade and capable doctor. He is passionate for his own career, enthusiastic about his work with the wounded, boasting of his attainments at the operating table, delighted to be of service to humanity. He is so kind that it is a happy thing to help and save other people. To some extent, he represents the kindness and upright. However, the sadness and fatigue of war soon affects him. As we can see, he becomes the homeless man, driven to desperate expedient in order to keep his sanity in the vast and gloomy war. Trying to relax from his duties, he contracts syphilis in an army brothel. The sensible man is eventually victimized by the filth and disease. Rinaldi just likes the protagonist in the movie The Hurt Locker, both of them are addicted to the war and only can realize their own value in the war, both of them are good-natured men but cannot feel themselves in the normal life. The cruel war deprives their common sensation of life. They are victims of the war. And another close friend is the nameless Italian priest. He catches every opportunity to promote the morals and values of Christianity. It is he who tries to convince Henry. During the holidays he persuades Henry to visit his hometown of Abruzzi as he describes the mountainous countryside like a place where has clear air, an abundance of birds and friendly people. It is a place where close to heaven. Unfortunately, most officers always play all kinds of unfriendly jokes on him and show little respect for him. Christianity is not the unshakable for those people. The priest stands for the poor faith which most people lose and confused about. In the later parts of the novel, the priest disappears, but the influence of his spirit is still there and affects the development of the story.
