Ernest Hemingway is one of the world’s famous novelists for the use of symbolism. His writing styles and the use of symbolism are much more different than others. He uses them in very skillful ways that the readers do not pick them up. In A Farewell to Arms, there are more usages of symbolism, this essay cannot pick them all out. So it only chooses some representations to discuss on. The purpose of this paper is focus on a love story that does not get too intimate. By the analysis of Hemingway’s symbolism, the paper revels that Hemingway is good at presenting foreboding images which convey different meanings. A Farewell to Arms symbolizes that Hemingway has become mature in his art. In this novel, Hemingway distinguishes different significance and subjects with his abundant consciousness which are vivid analogies. In Hemingway’s way, mountains are symbol of love and peace, plain is the symbol of rotten life and danger. Characters are shown vividly and since subjects is enhanced, the novel is full of appealing. The symbolism in A Farewell to Arms is not accidental but natural. In fact, symbolism plays an important role in Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms. Symbolism is one of Hemingway’s chief means of showing the unity of man and his natural and social environment. It makes the plot rich and influences the characterization and it also helps to work out the theme of the novel. Through the detailed analysis of symbolism from nature, we can come to the following conclusion. First, Hemingway uses profuse of symbolism which makes a great contribution to the richness of the themes of his novel. Besides those themes that have been discussed by Hemingway critics, we find more themes that concealed in the novel: losing belief, self-discovery, quest, modern restlessness, the lack ideal harmonies, preserving the traditional cultures and civilization, losing paradise, and so on. Second, Hemingway’s abundant use of symbolism makes the capacities and the contents of the novel become rich. They provide us with the pastoral imagery that reflects people’s imagination and desire. It also forms a demonic world---the world of nightmare and confusion. It reinforces the contrast between the realistic and psychological aspects of the narrative. Finally, Hemingway’s use of symbolism also greatly influences his characterization. It makes his main characters vividly. The various Biblical archetypal images are related to the actual lives of main characters in the society. Hemingway relies heavily on the emotive quality of the symbolism, working outwards from the particular emotional quality of experience to the more philosophical, more universal viewpoint. We cannot fully understand Hemingway’s characters unless we share their feelings. Symbolism from nature and religion in a A Farewell to Arms constantly stimulates our emotion towards the fate of the characters and events mostly rely on them. Doubtless the fact that A Farewell to Arms and his other novels become so popular and influential has a close connection with his abundant use of symbolism in them
