Henry doesn’t know what true love is. In chapter 11 of the novel , the priest goes to the field hospital to visit Henry. The priest tells him what true love is: “When you love, you wish to do things for, and you wish to serve.”(Ernest,Hemingway,1929:128) At their relationship develops, he gradually knows what love is. When Catherine is pregnant He tries to protect Catherine from harm and danger , he asks her to marry him to maintain her reputation, when Catherine is going to give birth to a child, he recommends them to move to the bigger town where is near hospital. He is willing to accept suggestions to make Catherine happy.
