Henry doesn’t know what true love is. In chapter 11 of the novel , the priest goes to the field hospital to visit Henry. The priest tells him what true love is: “When you love, you wish to do things for, and you wish to serve.”(Ernest,Hemingway,1929:128) At their relationship develops, he gradually knows what love is. He tries to protect Catherine from harm and danger When Catherine is pregnant. he asks her to marry him in order to maintain her reputation, when Catherine is going to give birth to a child, he recommends them to move to the bigger town where is near hospital. He is willing to accept suggestions to make Catherine happy.
