Thanks to the development in technology, we are now enabled to live much more conveniently and work much more efficiently. However, this does not mean all to our life. Therefore, those artists, such as musicians, painters and writers are still respected no matter how advanced the technology is. In this essay, I would like to analyze the value that arts can bring us while the science and technology may fail to produce. Arts, in forms ranging from pictures and literatures to music, help to enrich people’s spiritual life. After people are free from the worries about starvation and warmth, they may start to pursuit something to adjust, improve, enrich and develop their spiritual life, to improve their personal qualities, such as their cognitive ability, their emotional competences and their persistence. In this sense, arts, not science and technology, can fulfill the task. For example, a piece of painting may deepen people’s understanding of the world, a piece of music may arouse people’s echoes in their hearts, and an article may stimulate people’s imagination beyond the reality. Arts contribute to people’s release of their internal desires and emotions in reality. Due to the progress of science and technology, life pace is speeding up over the time, exerting growing stress in people’s life, which, without outlets, may lead to psychological problems. Fortunately, arts are there to help people realize their dreams in this case, because arts, usually reflecting the life in an exaggerated or concentrated way, will amuse people, and then help them feel relaxed and refreshed. Arts appreciation encourages an emotional communication between the audience, originators and performers. In a process to search and discover the value of arts, the feelings that the creators have once experienced, displayed in the form of actions, colors, sounds and words, can be there to carry away the audience, enabling them to experience the same feeling, which is hard to be done by any lifeless technology. For instance, seeing the smile on Mona Lisa’s face, a smile may simultaneously arise in our hearts, hearing the sound of nature from Beethoven’s symphony, a feeling may take us away from the reality, and reading stories in Shakespeare’s scripts, an imagination may bring us back into history. To sum up, although our life is greatly satisfied by the development of science and technology, we still need those artists to enrich our spiritual life. Only with a perfect combination of the improvement in people’s life both materially and spiritually, will people then enjoy their happiness to the most.
