The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month.Its evolution and development is very interesting. There are many legends describing the evolution of the festival.The most popular being in commemoration of Qu Yuan,a minister of the state of Chu during the Warring States Period and one of the China's earliest poets.In the face of great pressure from powerful State of Qin,he advocated enriching the country and strengthening its military forces so as to fight against the Qin.However,he was opposed by aristocrats and later deposed and exiled by king Huai When Qu Yuan heard that Qin troops had finnally conqured the Chu capital.He finished his last poem and jumped into the Miluo raiver,bound to a large stone.It was the 5th day of the 5th month in the Chinese lunar calender.After his death,the people of Chu gathered along the banks of the river to pay their respects.The fishermen sailed their boats up and down the river looking up his body,to divert fish and shrimps from attacking his body.People threw zongzi and eggs into the water.An old doctor poured a jug of realgar wine into the water,hoping to make all aqutic beasts drunk. Later,eating zongzi and dringking realgar wine becomes a popular tredition on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month,it is also a custom to hang warm wormwood and carry "fragrant pouches"made of pieces of cloth with coloured silk threads.All these have a common purpose-to keep the evil spirits away. All in all,this festival in a significant festival in China.
