In consumer goods company, marketing department is playing an increasing important role. Long-term reputation-building and short-term promotion are two key strategies when doing marketing. As far as I am concerned, those two approaches are equally significant for the company. It is evident that the reputation of a company is essential to attract costumers. When consumers make purchase decisions, they tend to choose the products that are produced by reputable and famous companies. It helps them to ensure the products are in better quality than others. According to a joint effort from the top 5 academic institutions in the US and the UK, 80% of the 8000 interviewees, who are keen to shopping, in IT, education and finance sectors in Sydney, Tokyo and NY in the age group from 25 to 50 have express that they would prefer the company with better fame when selecting products. On the other hand, short-term promotion by means of discounts and special offers is also a key to the success of the company. Attractive promotion can help to catch consumers’ eyes and they tend to believe that it is a great opportunity to purchase these products if they are on discounts. According to the same survey mentioned above, 75 percent of interviewees believe that they would consider the discounted products while shopping. In conclusion, marketers in consumer goods company should place emphasis on both long-term strategy by boosting the fame of the company and short-term approach through discounts and special offers.
