Introduction
Government spending on building free libraries has aroused heated debate. Although it would cost the government a large mount of budget, as far as I am concerned, libraries in each town could bring more benefits the citizens. Libraries have a range of merits. It is evident that libraries are a symbol of reading, not just simply a place for people to borrow books. People who love reading could have this opportunity to find a peaceful place for them to relax and enjoy the books. According to a joint effort by 5 leading institutions in the US and the UK, 70% of 8000 interviewees, who come from different backgrounds, have expressed that they are more likely to read when there is a library in town. Admittedly, establishing a library involves a large government spending and people argue that government could possibly invest the money in more demanding places such as mitigating the poverty of the poor. However, the library is crucial in terms of the civilisation of the nation and this can make a huge difference in further developing the country. In conclusion, despite large spending, it is worthwhile establishing libraries as they are beneficial to the residents as well as the community as a whole.
